Fun Facts about Past MSBC

 
  • Midsummer Bible Camp (MSBC) was not always at Camp Leatherwood. Before Camp Leatherwood, MSBC was held at Montgomery Bell State Park from the mid-70s to 1985.

  • The original Midsummer Bible Camp was first held at Natchez Trace State Park for one year. (Either 1974 or 1975)

  • Some of the first campers of MSBC at Natchez Trace were Cheryl Daughtery, Lora Pack, Timothy Spann, and Trudi Martin.

  • Mr. Bernice (an elder at Chapel Hill) was the camp director for years and was nicknamed “Burnt Toast” while at camp.

  • Mr. David Mosley was the first Camp Director of Midsummer Bible Camp. After him was Donny Mosley, Bernice Potts, and now Greg Hawkins.

  • Some of the counselors from the first year of MSBC at Camp Leatherwood were Ferris and Carolyn Tidwell, Big Al and Marsha Griffin, Mary Lou and Wayne Hogue, David Dawson, Gary Warf, David Willis, Rosie and Bernice Potts, Greg Hawkins, Tim Hogue, Tim Hogue, Marla Corlew, Brooks Duke, Gail and Dianne Mosley, and Al Jones.

  • The “Where is Sussie” tradition originated with David Mosley in the early years of camp. He brought the idea over from another camp he had attended. (Source: Rosie and Bernice Potts)

  • When MSBC was at Montgomery Bell there use to be what seemed like 100s of people at the worship services each night. Many visitors were baptized. (Source: Rosie and Bernice Potts)

 

Fun Camp Leatherwood Facts

  • The original Camp Leatherwood Mess Hall burned down in February of 2016 and the new mess hall would not open until March of 2021. A period of 5 years.

  • The original Camp Leatherwood Mess Hall or Dining Hall was dedicated as the “David Mosley” Dining Hall. David Mosley dreamed of having a camp and he pushed to make it a reality.

  • 2020 was the first time Camp Leatherwood has not hosted a summer camp since it’s start back in 1986. This was partly due to the construction of the new mess hall and partly due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

  • The Swimming Pool at Camp Leatherwood was built in 2000, making it over 20 years old.

  • Campers and visitors at camp leatherwood have been baptized in a dedicated dunk tank outside the mess hall, in the creek, in a small baptismal pool next to the hillside stage, at White Bluff Church of Christ building, and then in the pool.

  • Each church was put in charge of building the original cabins and that’s why they have church names on them.

  • The cabins and the original dining hall were all built the same year which now makes the original cabins the oldest structures at camp.

Random Fun Facts

  • We use roughly 50 pounds of sugar at camp each week.

  • We crack over 45 dozen eggs throughout the week of camp. That’s 540 eggs.

  • We cook over 110 pounds of ground beef at camp each week.

  • According to cook Trina Griffin, Macaroni and Cheese is the hardest thing to cook at camp.

  • The most popular snack at MSBC are ring pops. The second- Sour Straws.
